The Canvas 3.5.2 Updater is a two-disk set containing the files necessary to update your copy of Canvas to version 3.5.2. Refer to the “Installing the Updater and Tools” section below for information on installing the Updater and external tools onto your hard drive.
Install One contains Canvas™ 3.5.2 Updater.sea, a self-extracting archive that places the Canvas 3.5.2 Updater application program, Canvas Prefs file, and the Read Me file for the new Twain tool onto your hard drive. The Canvas 3.5.2 Updater program updates version 3.5 of the Canvas program to version 3.5.2. Refer to the "Updating the Canvas program" section below to update your copy of Canvas to version 3.5.2.
Install Two contains Tools.sea, a self-extracting archive that places the Updated "Canvas Tools" folder and the Updated "Canvas™ 3.5 Goodies" folder onto your hard drive. Refer to the "Updating the external tools and Goodies" section below to update your Canvas tools.
Refer to the "Information for ToolPAK™ users" section for information on using the Imaging and Utility ToolPAKs with Canvas 3.5.2.
*NOTE*: To ensure that you have a full working version of Canvas 3.5.2, you MUST update both the program and the external tools.
To install the Canvas 3.5.2 Updater:
1. Insert the Updater disk labeled "Install 1" in your disk drive.
2. Double-click the Canvas™ 3.5.2 Updater.sea icon.
A startup screen alert box appears; click Continue to proceed.
A directory dialog box appears for you to select a location for the Canvas™ 3.5.2 Updater folder.
3. Choose a location for the folder from the directory. You can type a new name for the folder in the text box. Click Save.
A thermometer box indicates the folder is installing.
An alert box notifies you when the installation is complete. Click Quit to close this dialog box. The Canvas™ 3.5.2 Updater folder will be on your hard drive. This folder contains the Canvas™ 3.5.2 Updater, Canvas Prefs file, and the Read Me file for the new Twain tool.
To install the updated tools:
1. Insert the Updater disk labeled "Install 2" in your disk drive.
2. Double-click the Tools.sea icon.
A startup screen alert box appears; click Continue to proceed.
A directory dialog box appears for you to select a location for the Updated Canvas 3.5.2 Tools folder.
3. Choose a location for the folder from the directory. You can type a new name for the folder in the text box. Click Save.
A thermometer box indicates the folder is installing.
An alert box notifies you when the installation is complete. Click Quit to close this dialog box. The Updated Canvas 3.5.2 Tools folder will be on your hard drive. This folder contains the Updated "Canvas Tools" folder and the Updated "Canvas™ 3.5 Goodies" folder.
You can now update the Canvas program and external tools.
There are a few important things to consider before you run the Canvas 3.5.2 Updater program:
• You cannot use the Canvas 3.5.2 Updater on version 3.0.x of Canvas. If you need to upgrade your copy of Canvas from version 3.0.x to version 3.5, contact Deneba Software's Customer Support Department for upgrade purchase information. Our mailing address, phone and fax numbers, and other information, are at the end of this document.
• You cannot use the Canvas 3.5.2 Updater on demonstration versions of Canvas.
• Do not use the Canvas 3.5.2 Updater on non-English versions of Canvas. Doing so will change your copy of Canvas to an English version, which will not be compatible with non-English operating systems.
• If you are running System 7, turn off all system extensions before using the Updater. To do so, hold down the Shift key and restart your computer. Keep holding down the Shift key until the startup screen reads, "Welcome to Macintosh. Extensions off."
• If you are running System 6, disable all virus-detection INITs before using the Updater. To do so, remove the INITs from your System Folder and restart.
• Use the Canvas 3.5.2 Updater on a copy of your Canvas program, and place the copy in a folder and not on the Finder desktop. When the update is complete, you can delete the original and move the updated Canvas program back into your Canvas™ 3.5 folder.
To update your copy of Canvas 3.5 to version 3.5.2:
1. Make sure Canvas is not running before you update the program.
2. Double-click the Canvas™ 3.5.2 Updater icon.
A directory dialog box appears asking you to choose a copy of Canvas to update.
3. Locate your copy of the Canvas program in the directory and click Open.
A thermometer box appears notifying you of the update's progress. When the update is complete, a window listing the steps to complete the update will appear.
4. Click OK to quit the Updater.
You must now update your Canvas Prefs file.
5. Move the Canvas Prefs file inside the Canvas™ 3.5.2 Updater folder into the folder containing your Canvas Prefs file (which should be your Canvas™ 3.5 folder).
A dialog box appears asking you if you wish to replace "Canvas Prefs" with the one you are moving. Click OK.
You can now discard the updater application.
6. Drag the Canvas™ 3.5.2 Updater program to the Trash.
If the Exterminator external tool is in your Canvas Tools folder, you can remove it or deactivate it using the ToolPicker once you update your copy of Canvas to version 3.5.2. The Exterminator tool has been incorporated into the Canvas 3.5.2 program.
Once you update your copy of Canvas to version 3.5.2, you will not need to use the TypeUpdater program to update files you save in the Canvas 3.0 format. Files you save in this format will save correctly. You might, however, need the TypeUpdater to update Canvas 3.0 files saved in an earlier version of Canvas 3.5.
Make sure Canvas is not running before you update your external tools.
To update the external tools:
1. Open the Updated Canvas 3.5.2 Tools folder.
2. Open the Updated "Canvas Tools" folder.
3. Select all the tools and drag them into your Canvas Tools folder.
A dialog box appears asking you if you wish to replace items of the same name.
4. Click OK.
A new tool has been added to Canvas 3.5.2, the Twain tool. This tool is in the Updated "Canvas™ 3.5 Goodies" folder. Refer to the document called "Read Me — Twain tool" for information on using this tool.
To update the tools in your Goodies folder:
1. Open the Updated Canvas 3.5.2 Tools folder.
2. Open the Updated "Canvas™ 3.5 Goodies" folder.
3. Select all the tools and drag them into either your Canvas™ 3.5 Goodies folder or your Canvas Tools folder, depending on the location of the original Goodies folder tools.
A dialog box should appear asking if you wish to replace items of the same name.
4. Click OK.
After you update the Canvas program and external tools, you must rebuild your Desktop file. To do so, hold down the Command and Option keys while restarting your computer. A dialog box will appear asking if you want to rebuild your Desktop file; click OK.
If you have the Canvas ToolPAKs, do not install any items from Disks 1 and 2 of the ToolPAKs. These disks contain software for updating Canvas from version 3.0.x to 3.0.6, and are no longer necessary if you are using Canvas 3.5.
If you have the Design ToolPAK, do not install any tools from Disk 3 of the Design ToolPAK. Canvas 3.5 already incorporates up-to-date versions of these tools.
To install the Imaging ToolPAK tools:
1. Make sure Canvas is not running.
2. Insert Disk 3 of the Imaging ToolPAKs in your disk drive.
3. Open the Imaging Tools folder.
4. Select all the tools and drag them into your Canvas Tools folder.
5. Double-click the Textures ƒ.sea icon.
A startup screen dialog box appears; click Continue to proceed.
A directory dialog box appears asking you to select a location for the Textures ƒ folder.
6. Choose the inside of your Canvas Tools folder from the directory. Click Save.
A thermometer box indicates the folder is installing.
To install the Utility ToolPAK tools:
1. Make sure Canvas is not running.
2. Insert Disk 3 of the Utility ToolPAKs in your disk drive.
3. Open the Utility Tools folder.
4. Select the following files and drag them into your Canvas Tools folder:
Andromeda (image filter)
Font Lister
GE Classic Art 1 Sampler (image filter)
GIF I/O
Imported Filters
Menu Palettes
Object Data I/O
Photoshop I/O
Undo Killer
*NOTE*: The Menu Palettes tool is included in both the Imaging and Utility ToolPAKs. If you already installed this tool from Disk 3 of the Imaging Tools, you do not need to install it from the Utility Tools.
*NOTE*: Do not use the Cache Group tool from the Utility ToolPAK with Canvas 3.5.2. This tool is not compatible with the Canvas 3.5 application.
If you are using the Utility ToolPAK's Imported Filter tool with the Twain module from Adobe Photoshop, it is recommended that you use the Canvas 3.5.2 Twain tool instead. The Twain tool provides more options than the Imported Filters tool.
The following section contains information that might not be covered in your Canvas manual or Canvas 3.5 Release Notes.
Auto Trace
Canvas uses the default foreground and background color, arrow type, arrowhead, dash style, pen mode; solid black pen pattern; and no fill pattern to create auto traces.

Bind Text
You can bind text to a draw object created with a core tool, the Multigon, Pressure Pen, Spiral, or Star tool. You can also bind text to a paint object's bounding rectangle. The bound text and the object can then be modified individually or grouped and modified as a unit.

CGM files
You do not need to hold down the Command key to display the CGM Import Options or CGM Export Options dialog box when opening or saving a CGM file. These dialog boxes display automatically when you open or save a CGM file.
Saving CGM files
For best results when saving a CGM file, choose 32 Bit Fixed Real as your Coordinate Precision option in the CGM Export Options dialog box. This will ensure that the objects in your CGM file appear at the correct size when you open the file in Canvas at a 100% scale.

Combine
The Combine: Outline option creates a new object with the same foreground and background color, pen and fill pattern, pen size, pen mode, and dash style as the front most object.
If you choose the Combine: Outline option and any of the selected objects are lines, the lines will not be included in the outline.
The Combine: Add option creates a new object with the same foreground and background color, pen and fill pattern, pen size, pen mode, arrowhead, arrow type, and dash style as the back object.

Dashes
You can change the dash style of objects created with the Pressure Pen tool.

Dimension objects
Dimension objects use the default arrowhead, not the default arrow type.

EPSF files
You can select the file type and preview type of EPSF files you save in Canvas. To do so, choose the EPSF file format in the Save As dialog box, and hold down the Command key when you click Save. A dialog box appears with several options.
File Type: Select a File Type that can be read by the program in which you will open your EPSF file. Select EPSF to save the file as an EPSF file. Select TEXT to save the file as a text file.
Preview: Select this checkbox to include a preview with your EPSF file.
If you will open your EPSF file in a Macintosh program, select 1 BIT PICT to include a black-and-white preview, or 8 BIT PICT to include a color preview.
If you will open your EPSF file in a Windows program, select EPSI to include a preview that is compatible across platforms.
Saving EPSF and Separations files
Canvas does not support TrueType fonts in documents you save in the EPSF or Separations file formats. If you try to print such a document, and the printer does not have PostScript versions of the document’s TrueType fonts, the TrueType fonts will be substituted with Courier. If you want to save a document containing TrueType fonts, you can convert the TrueType text to Bezier objects using the Create Beziers: Filled option. Please refer to the Canvas manual for more information on using this feature.

Extrude
Canvas uses the default dash, arrow type, and arrowhead to create extrusions.

Fractalize
The maximum Wiggle and Density values you can type in the Fractal Specifications dialog box are 20 and 5 respectively.

A Canvas document can have a maximum of 455 layers.

Opening documents
Canvas can open documents that have been saved in a variety of file formats. When you open a document that was created in another program, however, data can be lost because of non-standard options that Canvas might not support. If you have problems opening a document that was created in another program, try saving the document using the default settings for the file format. Avoid proprietary options to help ensure successful transfer of documents to Canvas.

PICT files
A PICT file saved in another program might include PICT comments describing specific items (line weights, line types, and so on) that prevent Canvas from correctly translating the file. If you have trouble opening a PICT file from another program, try holding down the Option key as you click Open in the Open dialog box. Holding down the Option key will strip out the comments when you open the file in Canvas.

Printing color separations
To print color separations of a Canvas illustration from a desktop-publishing program, save the illustration in Canvas using the Separations file format, and choose Xpress Format from the Save Separations Format dialog box. This will create a .C, .M, .Y, .K, and .Main file. Place the .Main file into the desktop-publishing program. You can then print separations of the illustration from within the desktop-publishing program.
Printing gradient fills
To correctly print gradient fills from a PostScript printer, the Separations external tool must be loaded.
Printing with the LaserWriter 8.1.1 printer driver
Due to a limitation in the LaserWriter 8.1.1 printer driver, objects that are not rotated in Canvas 3.5 documents might print rotated. If this occurs, use the Print Special: PostScript command to print the document. You can also try choosing a different version of the LaserWriter printer driver before printing the document.

Saving documents
The keyboard shortcut for the Save As command is Command-Option-S.
Create Preview checkbox
The Create Preview checkbox in the Save As dialog box saves a preview of a Canvas document for display in an image-browsing program such as Kudo® or Aldus® Fetch™. Select this checkbox if you are saving a Canvas document that you plan to add to an image-browsing catalog. You can then use the image browser to preview the document.
The Create Preview checkbox is dimmed if the file format you chose does not support the Create Preview option, or if your computer does not have Color QuickDraw.

Text
You can type a text size up to 999 points in the Size text box.
Uppercase, lowercase, and title style
If you open a document from an earlier version of Canvas in Canvas 3, and you want to convert any uppercase, lowercase, or title text to Plain text style, you must retype the text.

TIFF files
Before opening a large color TIFF file, you should allot 3X the size of the paint object in the TIFF file to Canvas. Refer to the formula on page 315 of the Canvas 3.5 User's manual (or page 15-2 of the Canvas 3.0 manual) to calculate the size of a paint object.
For example, if your TIFF file contains a 1-bit, 300 dpi paint object that is 103 square inches, the size of the paint object is approximately 1130K. Multiply this number by three to get 3390, and add this to the 1500K normally allotted to Canvas. You should therefore allot approximately 5000K to Canvas to successfully open the file.
Saving 8-bit TIFF files
When you save an 8-bit TIFF file in Canvas, the paint object in the file will export as a 32-bit paint object.
Saving TIFF files: Compression options
The Simple Compression option in the TIFF Options dialog box is only available for B & W TIFF files.

Tint Objects
The Tint Objects option of the Special Effects submenu does not have any effect on text, picture objects, or 8-bit paint objects.
